Your filed income tax returns, summarised and compared year by year
Upload the acknowledgement, form or JSON that the Income Tax e-filing portal gives you for each return you have filed. FinLens reads the year, the filing and its figures, checks the printed sums, and lays your years side by side.

What the Tax Filing page does
Tax Filing keeps one record per assessment year of the returns you have already filed. From the acknowledgement (ITR-V) it reads the form, the section you filed under, the filing and verification dates, total income, tax, interest and fee, taxes paid, and the refund or amount payable. From the full ITR-1 form, or the portal's JSON of it, it also reads your income by head, every Chapter VI-A deduction as claimed and as allowed, the computation of tax, taxes paid by kind and TDS by deductor.
An assessment year picker sits at the top, beside Where to find your ITR PDF? and Upload filed ITR PDF. Tiles show Total Income, Total Deductions, Total Tax Paid and Refund / Due, and tabs lead to Overview, Income, Deductions, Taxes, Comparison and Documents.
Why keep past ITRs in one place
Old returns are asked for at awkward moments: a home loan, a visa application, a revised filing, a notice from the department. They are also the clearest record of how your income and tax have changed over the years. Yet they usually sit as PDFs in a downloads folder, named by a fifteen-digit number, with the figures you want buried in a long form.
FinLens turns each return into figures you can compare, and keeps the file it read with the record, so the original is one tap away.
Who should use the ITR tracker
- Salaried people who file ITR-1, for whom fixed rules read the full breakdown.
- Anyone who wants several years of total income, tax paid and refunds side by side.
- People who sometimes file a revised return and want the record to follow the latest filing.
- Families who keep each member's returns on that member's own profile.
Benefits of tracking your income tax returns
Years compared
Tax Comparison (Last 3 Years) sets total income and taxes paid side by side, and the Filed ITR Records table lists every year on file.
Refunds followed
When the Income Tax Department's refund mail reaches a Gmail account you connected, the refund is marked as received, with its date.
Breakdowns from the full form
Add the ITR-1 form or its JSON and the Income Breakdown and Deductions Claimed cards fill in, section by section.
One record per year
A revised or updated return filed later replaces the earlier one for that year. The same file uploaded again changes nothing.
Printed sums checked
Total tax must equal tax plus interest and fee, and the amount due must equal total tax less taxes paid, before the figures are kept.
How ITR tracking works in FinLens
Download from the e-filing portal
Go to e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns. Download Receipt gives the acknowledgement; Download Form or Download JSON gives the full return.
Upload it
On Tax Filing, choose Upload filed ITR PDF. A PDF or a JSON of up to 10 MB is accepted, and the page knows which of the three documents it is.
Identity is checked
The name on the return must read as the name on your profile, and its PAN must match the PAN saved in Profile → Documents. If none is saved yet, the return's PAN is saved there for later returns.
Halves are joined
The acknowledgement and the full form of the same filing become one record once their figures agree.
Compare and open
Pick an assessment year, move between the tabs, or open the stored file from the Documents tab.
What you provide
- The acknowledgement (ITR-V) PDF of each filed return, from the e-filing portal.
- Optionally, the full ITR-1 form as a PDF, or the portal's JSON of it, for the breakdown.
- Your name in Profile → Personal Details, so the return can be matched to you.
- Gmail connected, if you want refunds marked as received.
What FinLens reads from a return
- Assessment year, form, section and filing kind (original, belated, revised or updated), filing and verification dates, and how the return was verified.
- The fifteen numbered amounts on the acknowledgement, from total income to the refund or tax payable.
- From the ITR-1 form or JSON: income by head, deductions by section, the computation of tax, taxes paid by kind, and TDS with each deductor's name.
- Your name and PAN are compared with your profile and then discarded. The address, IP address and verification code printed on the return are never kept.
- The PAN and the acknowledgement number are kept only as one-way codes that let FinLens recognise them again, with the acknowledgement's last four digits for display.
Limitations of the Tax Filing page
- FinLens reads returns you have already filed. It does not prepare, file or verify returns, and nothing on the page is tax advice.
- The fixed rules read the full form and the JSON for ITR-1 only. For other forms, the full return is not read by the rules.
- If the rules cannot read a return, it is read once by an AI model, with your name and PAN replaced by placeholders and the provider asked not to store the answer. The same identity checks apply before anything is stored.
- A return in someone else's name is not accepted on your account. Upload it on that person's profile in Family.
- A refund shows as Refund due until the department's refund mail is found in a Gmail account you connected.
- Form 16, AIS, Form 26AS and TDS certificates are not read by Tax Filing.
Questions about tax filing in FinLens
Does FinLens file my income tax return?
No. FinLens reads returns you have already filed on the Income Tax e-Filing portal and keeps their figures. It does not prepare, file or verify a return.
Which file should I upload?
The acknowledgement (Download Receipt) gives the headline figures. For the income and deduction breakdown, also upload the full ITR-1 form (Download Form) or its JSON (Download JSON).
What happens when I file a revised return?
Upload it. A revised or updated return filed later replaces the earlier filing for that assessment year, and the earlier document says it was replaced.
Why was my return not accepted as mine?
The name on the return has to read as the name in Profile → Personal Details, and its PAN has to match the one in Profile → Documents. Once your profile is corrected (a change of name or of an identity document is approved by the FinLens team first), choose Retry on the document. A family member's return belongs on their own profile.
Does the file from the portal work as it is?
Yes. The e-filing portal sometimes wraps the PDF inside another kind of file. FinLens finds the PDF inside and reads it, so there is nothing to convert.
Where can I keep all my filed ITRs and see a summary of each year?
On the Tax Filing page. Upload the acknowledgement, the ITR-1 form or the JSON for each year; FinLens reads total income, deductions, taxes paid and the refund, checks the printed sums, and shows the years side by side, with the income breakdown and the deductions claimed for the year you pick.
What is the best way to manage my tax filing records in India?
One record per assessment year, read from the portal's own files rather than typed, with a revised return replacing the earlier one. That is what Tax Filing keeps. It does not prepare or file a return, and no AI model reads one: every figure is read by fixed rules and checked against the printed sums.
